Online stores sell it in vials labeled "for research purposes only" to customers who are obviously not researchers.

What BPC-157 Actually Is

BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide, a chain of 15 amino acids, derived from a fragment of a protective protein found in human gastric juice. The name stands for Body Protection Compound. It was first studied for its apparent ability to protect and heal the gut lining, and interest later expanded to tendons, ligaments, muscle, and blood vessels.

Mechanistically, researchers believe it may promote angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) and modulate growth factor signaling involved in tissue repair. That is the theory, and in animal models it has looked promising for decades.

What the Research Actually Shows

Here is where honesty separates a medical practice from a supplement pitch.

The animal evidence is real and fairly extensive. Rodent studies have repeatedly shown accelerated healing of tendon, ligament, gut, and muscle injuries. If you have seen impressive claims about BPC-157, they almost certainly trace back to this animal literature.

The human evidence is close to nonexistent. There are no large, published, placebo-controlled human trials demonstrating that BPC-157 works in people. No established human dosing standards. No long-term human safety data. Rodent results often fail to translate to humans, which is exactly why human trials exist.

What the Regulators Have Said

Two facts worth knowing before anyone offers you a vial:

  • The FDA has restricted it for compounding. In 2023, the FDA placed BPC-157 in Category 2 of its bulk substances list for compounding, citing safety concerns including a lack of adequate safety data. In practice this means compounding pharmacies are not supposed to prepare it, which pushed much of the supply into unregulated channels.
  • WADA prohibits it for athletes. The World Anti-Doping Agency lists BPC-157 among prohibited unapproved substances. Tested athletes cannot use it, period.

The FDA action matters beyond athletics. When a substance leaves the regulated pharmacy channel, quality control leaves with it. "Research chemical" vendors face no purity, sterility, or dosing-accuracy requirements. Independent testing of gray-market peptides has repeatedly found products that are underdosed, contaminated, or not the labeled compound at all. With an injectable, that is not a small risk.

Why People Still Take It

We understand the appeal, and it deserves a fair statement. Nagging injuries are miserable. Recovery slows with age. The animal data is genuinely intriguing, anecdotes are everywhere, and mainstream medicine often has little to offer a stubborn tendon problem beyond rest and physical therapy. But an unmet need does not make an unproven compound safe or effective. It just makes the marketing easier.
